Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome Symptoms - What Are They?
As it's name suggests, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is marked by
exhaustion. A fatigue so deep and debilitating that it is
not relieved by rest - no matter how much one tries. This is
not a fatigue that is the result of an ongoing exertion. And
the person who is suffering from it has had a marked
reduction in normal activity by at least fifty percent. This
is one of the most noticeable characteristic of all chronic
fatigue syndrome symptoms
Whether the fatigue has manifested itself suddenly or
gradually, when someone becomes a victim to it, it can last
anything from six months to a number of years. In many
incidents it coincides with an another illness that could be
respiratory or gastrointestinal in nature . It may follow an
acute infection that has flu-like symptoms. And it has been
found that a severe trauma - whether it be physical as in
the case of an injury or surgery or emotional such as in the
loss of a loved one - can also be a trigger for this
syndrome.
The above is one of the more obvious chronic fatigue
syndrome symptoms. The other common symptoms of this
deliberating illness are:
1) Concentration Problems
Some have described this increasingly inability to
concentrate as a form of 'mental fogginess'. They will
encounter problems in the usage of proper words. Some will
find their short-term memory affected as well - they have
problem recalling recent incidents. Some will find they have
problem concentrating for any length of time. In the more
serious cases, some may experience some spatial
disorientation and as a result feel clumsy and unsteady on
their feet.
2) Muscular And Joint Pain
There can be a significant amount of pain in the muscles and
joints of someone suffering from CFS. The pain felt is very
similar to that of arthritis minus the redness or swelling
of the muscles and joints. There can be a feeling of general
muscle weakness and involuntary twitching of the muscles as
well.
3) Headache
In some cases of CFS, headaches may occur. These headaches
will be very different in nature, severity and duration that
the normal headaches. The individual may experience episodes
of more frequent, painful and longer duration headaches.
4) Nerve And Skin Sensitivity
There can be extreme nerve and skin sensitivity that can be
described as painful. Some of these CFS sufferers described
feeling of pain in their eyes, jaw and bones. Sore throats
and swollen painful lymph nodes can be common occurrences.
Some may even experience chest pain and suffer from
shortness of breath.
5) Inability To Sleep
Getting sufficient quality sleep is yet another dysfunction
that comes with CFS. Their sleep may be affected in that the
length of deep sleep may be cut short or interrupted, their
breathing rhythms may be off and their sleep may be
disturbed by vivid disturbing dreams or nightmares.
6) Unusual Body Temperature Or Body Weight
Certain neuroendocrine functions (such as our metabolism)
may be affected and the CFS sufferer may experience
fluctuations in their body temperature - going between
feverish and cold. They may find they have a decreased
tolerance of extremes in environmental temperatures. There
may be digestive disturbances in that they find a change in
their appetite which in turn could translate into an unusual
gain or loss of weight. In addition these gastrointestinal
problems may include bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain and
nausea.
While this list covers some of the more common
chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms associated with
CFS, it is always good to keep in mind that each individual
is special and unique. Since some of these symptoms could
possibly be the manifestations of an entirely different
underlying medical problem, it is very important for you to
consult your health care provider on your concerns or
worries.
