Prescription and Over
The Counter Drugs - Are They the Solution To A Good Night's
Sleep?
In the search for a good night's rest an individual may
feel that they need to go the route of over the counter and
prescription medication. Although these types of drugs have
become more and more popular it still remains a good
suggestion to not take these things lightly.
Understandably it can be very tempting to treat the symptom
of sleeplessness in stead of searching for what might be any
one of a number of causes. That takes time and effort. And
in todays fast paced world it may seem imperative to get the
solution as fast as possible by using any source possible.
While one may occasionally rely on the use of these drugs it
can happen that it becomes a habit. Instead of understanding
what is causing the problem of their insomnia and finding a
cure, an individual relying on these drugs will only end up
masking the real issue.
In fact, it has been found that sleeping pills can begin to
interfere with REM sleep. An essential aspect of a good
night's rest. Over time these sleeping aids can disrupt the
deeper stages of sleep. And some experts have found that if
these is kept up the patient will eventually find their
insomnia paradoxilly getting worse.
The other aspect of using any type of drug is the prospect
of negative side effects. In the case of many over the
counter medicines the range of side effects can include
confusion, dry mouth, feeling agitated, and depression. In
some reported incidents there has been a worsening of
symptoms regarding an enlarged prostate. In others, there
are problems with water retention and constipation.
For other well known prescription medications such as
Halcion, there were reports of cases of mental confusion and
amnesia. For ones such as Valium, Seconal and Dalmane there
were symptoms of sluggishness, confusion, restlessness and a
heightened sense of anxiety.
In recent times a new sleeping pill that has gained
notoriety is called Ambien. It claims to be able to give a
good night's rest without causing disruptions to the deeper
sleep cycles or the REM cycle. However, as we have come to
appreciate, these things take time to be thoroughly
investigated.
As with taking any medication it is good to remember that
there is the definite possibility of becoming dependent upon
it. It may be very difficult to stop taking it at some point
and you may find yourself having to suffer through some
withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, shaking and sweating to
do so.
Another caveat is that some medications can take you into a
rebound cycle where the insomnia keeps getting worse
requiring even more medication. We witness this cycle in
headache treatments as well.
And there is always the need to coordinate any new
medication with any current medicines that you might be
taking as the combinations of some drugs can cause some very
serious health issues.
Ultimately it is up to each individual and their health care
provider as to what path of treatment they will pursue to
treat this very frustrating problem. Still, it is encouraged
that one looks more closely at what might be the underlying
cause for their insomnia rather than just focusing on the
immediate short term relief.
